Some stuff from the latest drawing for animators project. We were allowed to do anything we wanted, so for some reason I was compelled to draw sharks dealing with contemporary human inconveniences/first world problems. Why?

Doodles...FROM THE ZOO. I'm going back to Sarasota after an amazingly relaxing and Skyrim-filled winter break, and spent my last day here in Houston drawing some fwuffy aminals.

I drew these on my super rad new toy, the Boogie Board Rip I got for Christmas! It's an LCD drawing/writing tablet that allows you to save a .pdf of whatever you draw on it. Turns out it makes a really nice, lightweight, simple, and paperless substitute for a sketchbook for going out and doing some life drawing like this. I actually preferred it to awkwardly holding a book in my hand and stuffing pencils and pens in my pockets. Not to mention it's way easier than scanning everything and comping it together. Nice and simple!

Contrary to the title there is nothing holiday related in this post. Only this brief mentioning that I am now enjoying winter break and wishing everyone a happy holiday season!

And more importantly, here's Push Pull Exaggerated! Same characters as before, but completely different animation style. It was fun being able to just worry about the animation this time around instead of running around like a chicken with its head cut off worrying about finishing textures and lighting and matte painting on top of everything else. Painted in Photoshop CS5 because Painter hates layers apparently and refused to run at a reasonable speed.

It will never be as dramatic as the following. But the music may be appropriate for viewing this image.

Also, here's my animatic for lip sync next semester...The audio's gonna be re-recorded by then I hope :X

Junior Year Continues!

Poor neglected blog. Here's some new stuff!

Push Pull Natural is the big animation assignment of the semester...now we're following it up with another animation with the same characters, but we have to animate it in a very exaggerated style. Everything you see was made by me.

And a preview of next semester: a lip sync animation, featuring a caricature of ourselves!

(My mom hates this drawing because she thinks I look fat....but, it's a caricature, not a make-yourself-prettier...cature. TAKE THAT, MOM!)

And a value painting that I was not too crazy about when I was working on it...I should have spent more time on it, but I did learn from it and hopefully my next painting will be a lot better. Hopefully the values aren't too messed up, I made the mistake of color correcting on a super bright Mac monitor, so it may look really weird on your screen....

I also recently got my demo reel back from Pixar! I'll have to trim it down a little to my favorite projects and post it on Vimeo sometime soon.

I've had a blast in San Francisco this summer in the Pixar Undergraduate Program working as a bouncing baby technical director-in-training. It's definitely been keeping me busy. Sadly there's only two weeks left before I gotta go back to school. Poo.

It is done! For now anyways. (Probably going to have to revisit some animation after class crit.) Monday afternoon was INSANE thanks to it being due at 6 pm for BoR submission, but thanks to my amazing friends I got it done on time. I have to give a shout out to Yoav for basically figuring out After Effects for me for the chair/cactus transtion. YAY YOAV. @_@

What an adventure sit stand has been. It made me realize how much I love doing all of the geeky stuff that is not animation...modeling, blendshapes, texturing, look and vis dev. <3 NUM. Now if only I could wish my UV's and weight painting into existence forevermore.

Can't wait to do more projects like this! I probably won't do this type of rendering next time, as fun as that was. Gotta keep experimenting!

Sit Stand in Progress!

Hey thar pilgrims. This is Sarsaparilla Jones (or Sassy if you prefer), and he is the character I will be animating for my next big CA project!

This is why there has been an excess of cowboys around here lately, haha. But Sassy here is an OUTLAW. A big bad outlaw. Ayup.

I had fun making him super stylized, but it's proving to be pretty challenging to translate into 3D. But he's definitely coming along, I think he'll turn out nicely once I get him textured up all nice and pretty. Here's a WIP, hands-less. And details-less. But I only started last Sunday.

More sooon! Hopefully he will be all finished up and pretty in a couple weeks!

Yo yo yo! So for DIPSY tonight we had an awesome theme...the Chinese zodiac! With the year of the rabbit fast approaching I decided to paint a bunny tsunami chasing away the tiger from last year.

As with all D.P.S.C. paintings, this took one hour in Photoshop.

Some character design options for my next animation assignment...I'm going with the cowboy/outlaw theme (which explains the excess of cowboys lately), hence the cacti. Woo!

This is pretty much the most fun way I've found to do character designs too. I will definitely be doing more like this!

Just 3 days left! As promised, here's some schoolwork.

First polygon character ever! Animations coming soon.

Some concept stuff for an animatic in concept class.

I hate the animation that came out of this assignment so I am too ashamed to post it. But here's the character from my traditional lip sync! I actually used some girls I knew from high school as a reference for how she should look... :P

I'll certainly have more once I stop messing with my blog and actually get back to my projects, and also I would like to scan in some sketchbook pages sometime...and after that I vow to actually have regular posting! I MUST.

I also (obviously) just changed the layout, including linking to a bunch of awesome people who I know personally or I just find totally awesome (or both.) These lists will hopefully grow since I stink at keeping track of artists I like on Blogspot. If you attend Ringling and would like a plug, leave a comment and I will link you too. :)

Bah! I keep meaning to update regularly but I always get into a weird routine where I convince myself that I will update later after I finish such-and-such project so I can cram it all into one post....which is probably a bad idea.

This is part of an image for a contest. A contest in which I thought it would be appropriate to include the tackiest unicorn possible complete with blatant lens flare and SHWEET NEBULA FX

Secretly I've always wanted to paint something like this...if only I had been around in the early 80's to sell posters/earn millions.

I'll post the other part of this sometime later this week when I finish it I guess.

So D.P.S.C. (digital painting sketch club) is a super rad club here at school where we all gather and get a topic to draw from (digitally or in a sketchbook, whatever) for an hour. After the hour's up it's styluses/pencils down and the winners are voted on and la dee dah.

It's an awesome way to relax and practice, mmhmmmmmm.

I went to the Body Worlds 2 Exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science today for some life drawing practice, it was woooonderful. Dead, skinless people are great models.
It's a really intriguing exhibit too, I'd recommend it to anyone who has a chance to go see it.

Weird story though, when I was drawing some girl came up to me and the conversation went a bit like this:
Girl: Hey are you a dancer?
Me: -wondering if I heard right- ...What?
Girl: Are you a dancer?
Me: ...Uh....no.
Girl: Oh. I saw you sketching and I was just wondering.

I don't know, where I come from generally we call people who sketch things artists and people who dance dancers.

The crab is actually unrelated, I was working on an art project and purchased a live crab and some claws for reference but I ended up not needing it. So I just sketched a drawing of it. She was not pleased. But she pinched my thumb really, really hard so she had it coming. (Which hurt like crazy but was still hilarious.)

CRABS ARE JERKS.

GUH OKAY last upload of the day, I'm addicted to posting everything I find for some reason.

I really don't like this piece that much, but my mom does for some reason.

On the flip side, my mom hates this one, I don't know if she realizes the importance of the fact that it's direct observation though.
That was 3 bloody weeks of holding this stupid eyelash curler up in my face and drawing with only one eye.
It was hellish.
Whatever, I don't think it's too bad.

A leetle birdy told me that it might be a good idea to include some character design stuff in my portfolio if I'm applying for CA, so here are the goods. These are also all from Ringling Precollege '08.

Starting with finished pieces and going through...development and random sketches, teehee.

Character created to represent a guide. I included a ridiculous amount of symbolism in her/his/its design, hopefully that is evident.

This guy's the trickster. The animals around his neck are all traditional representations of tricksters in different cultures.

Aaaand a bear-shark and a zombie with a keytar-axe because they're fun. YAY.
